This 293 gram iron-nickel meteorite was discovered in Egypt in 2009. It is officially classified as Gebel Kamil by the International Society for Meteoritics and Planetary Sciences. It features a "desert scorched sienna" patina, characteristic of this meteorite fall. Looking closely, you'll see shear lines where this fragment fractured from the main mass upon impact. The elongated shape of this stone make it an eye-catching display piece with a unique story.

The Gebel Kamil meteorite hit the earth over 5000 years ago with such force that it was torn apart at impact, creating metallic shrapnel from its remnants. These fragments were preserved thanks to the arid climate of the Egyptian desert. The meteorite crater was discovered in 2009 by a scientist searching for historical Egyptian civilization artifacts on Google Earth.

Gebel Kamil meteorites are a rare ungrouped iron class member, meaning they don't fit into any existing category of iron meteorites.

Unique Features of This Meteorite

--Iron Meteorite Patina--

A weathered surface layer that develops over time due to exposure to Earth’s atmosphere and environmental conditions. It often appears as a thin, reddish-brown to black coating caused by oxidation, creating a protective layer of iron oxides and hydroxides.

--Shear Lines--

Fine, parallel grooves etched into the surface of iron meteorite fragments from the Gebel Kamil impact. These lines formed due to intense shock and deformation during the meteorite’s high-velocity collision with Earth, creating a distinctive striated texture. Often accentuated by weathering, shear lines provide a visual record of the extreme forces that shaped the meteorite’s final form.

--Iron Meteorite--

Iron meteorites likely originate from the cores of differentiated planetesimals or protoplanets that formed early in the solar system’s history. These hefty space rocks are mostly made of iron and nickel. They're like cosmic cannonballs! When cut and polished, many show off a beautiful criss-cross pattern called the Widmanstätten pattern. Iron meteorites are prized by collectors for their striking appearance and durability.
