About the Book

Determined to solve the mystery, Milo visits the local observatory, where he meets Stella, an astronomer passionate about understanding the cosmos. Stella opens his eyes to the secrets of meteorites, from those formed deep within Earth-like worlds to rare treasures from Mars and the Moon. Armed with newfound knowledge, Milo sets out once again to see if he can find a rock with the features of a meteorite.

Why Did We Write It?

Simply put, there just aren't any great kids' books out there that introduce the wonder of meteorites in an accessible, engaging way. I wanted to create a book to help children learn about space through the lens of the meteorites that eventually make their way to Earth.

Meteorites are diverse, unique, and visually stunning. They provide the perfect gateway to several space topics, including the universe's formation, planets' creation and destruction, and planetary bodies' geology. We can learn about our closest neighbors, like the Moon and Mars, along with more distant travelers like asteroids.

Every child is born curious, making Milo’s journey relatable for all young explorers. After witnessing a meteorite fall, who wouldn’t want to embark on their own space rock hunt? Milo's adventure is a testament to curiosity and discovery, inviting readers to learn alongside him.

Scientific accuracy was a top priority for this project. The meteorite images in this book aren’t just random; they depict real meteorite types—like chondrites and pallasites—ensuring that the introduction to meteorites is both informative and thrilling. A visual glossary at the end helps young readers grasp key terms like fusion crust, regmaglypt, and chondrule.

Milo and the Midnight Meteorite will be the most engaging, accessible, and accurate way to introduce kids to the wonders of space through the lens of meteorites that have fallen to Earth. It's designed to either be read directly by students or read aloud by teachers or scientists and collectors conducting educational outreach.

Meet the Authors

Chris Sanders is a meteorite collector and space enthusiast. He is a member of the International Association of Meteorite Collectors (#8303). Chris is the Director of the Rural Technology Fund, a non-profit that provides technology education resources to rural public schools and libraries. He has authored seven cyber security books and received his doctorate in education from Baylor University.

Nichole Ferguson is an accomplished artist and illustrator with a Master’s degree in art history. A former gallery director at Brenau University, Nichole is now a celebrated local muralist known for bringing vibrant stories to life through her art. As a mom and a lover of all things whimsical—especially unicorns—she infuses her creations with magic and imagination, making her the perfect collaborator for children’s books.
