This 1979 gram (4.3 pound) meteorite is a fragment of asteroid 4 Vesta, the second largest asteroid in the solar system. It is classified as Jikharra 001 by the International Society for Meteoritics and Planetary Sciences.

This meteorite has a great rounded, meteoritic shape with lots of texture and character. A great, large sample of Vesta to display! This stone comes to us as the result of an ancient impact event that launched it into space before it came to rest in the Libyan desert. Its exterior has sections of visible remnant fusion crust that serve as evidence of its fiery descent through our atmosphere. It was discovered in 2022.

The Libyan meteorite Jikharra 001 is a remarkable eucrite, a type of basaltic achondrite that originated on the surface of the asteroid 4 Vesta, one of the largest bodies in the asteroid belt. Formed from volcanic lava flows more than 4.5 billion years ago, Jikharra 001 preserves evidence of a world that experienced melting, volcanism, and crust formation long before Earth was fully developed. Recovered from the deserts of Libya, Jikharra 001 offers collectors the opportunity to own a genuine fragment of an ancient asteroid crust; a piece of a differentiated world that once resembled a miniature planet.

This meteorite is not just a collectible; it’s an educational tool that brings the mystery and science of space directly into your hands.

Unique Features of This Meteorite

--Eucrite--

A type of achondritic stony meteorite that originated from the crust of the asteroid 4 Vesta, one of the largest bodies in the asteroid belt. They are primarily composed of basaltic rock, rich in pyroxene and plagioclase, and formed through volcanic or plutonic processes on Vesta’s surface. Eucrites provide valuable insights into planetary differentiation and the early history of the solar system.

--4 Vesta--

One of the largest objects in the asteroid belt, spanning about 525 km (326 miles) in diameter, and is the second most massive asteroid after Ceres. It has a differentiated structure with a core, mantle, and crust, making it more like a small planet than a typical asteroid. Vesta is the parent body of HED meteorites (howardites, eucrites, and diogenites), which provide direct evidence of volcanic and geological activity in the early solar system.

--Fusion Crust--

A thin, dark, glassy layer on the exterior of a meteorite formed during its fiery passage through Earth's atmosphere. This feature is often described as a "burned" appearance.
