This 8.61 gram meteorite is a fragment of the moon! It is classified as Gadamis 003 by the International Society for Meteoritics and Planetary Sciences.

Gadamis 003 is a lunar meteorite discovered in Libya that represents material ejected from the Moon’s surface during an impact event and later delivered to Earth. It is classified as an anorthosite, representing material from the Moon’s ancient highland crust. This composition and texture closely resemble samples returned by the Apollo 16 mission.

This stone displays a unique texture and an ashen silver and charcoal gray coloring reminiscent of the lunar surface from which it came. The interior of the stone is visible and polished, revealing unique clasts that make up the stone. This stone likely arrived on Earth as a result of an impact event that launched it into space. It eventually landed in the desert of Libya before being discovered in 2021.

Unique Features of This Meteorite

--Anorthosite--

A bright, reflective rock that makes up much of the Moon’s highlands and gives the Moon its light appearance when viewed from Earth. Composed mostly of plagioclase feldspar, it formed early in the Moon’s history as the lunar magma ocean cooled and lighter minerals floated to the surface.

--Lunar Meteorites--

Pieces of the Moon, right here on Earth! These meteorites were ejected from the lunar surface by asteroid impacts. They're incredibly rare and offer both scientists and collectors a chance to hold a piece of our celestial companion without the need for a space mission.
