Campo del Cielo meteorites are fragments of a massive iron meteorite that fell in what is now northern Argentina roughly 4,000–5,000 years ago. Classified as IAB iron meteorites, they are composed primarily of iron and nickel and often contain inclusions of silicate minerals and other materials that provide clues about processes occurring within the early solar system. The impact produced a large strewn field containing numerous craters and thousands of recovered fragments, including some of the largest meteorites ever discovered. Campo del Cielo specimens are especially popular with collectors because their dense metallic composition, sculpted surfaces, and remarkable history make them immediately recognizable examples of material from space.

About Your Meteorite:

• What is it? Campo del Cielo is an IAB iron meteorite, composed primarily of iron and nickel. It originated from a large metallic meteoroid that broke apart as it entered Earth’s atmosphere, scattering fragments across a wide area.
• Where is it from? Campo del Cielo meteorites are found in northern Argentina, primarily in the provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero. The name Campo del Cielo means “Field of Heaven” or “Field of the Sky.” The iron mass was once part of the core of a differentiated asteroid or proto-planet.
• How old is it? The meteorite itself formed billions of years ago during the early history of our solar system. It fell to Earth approximately 4,000–5,000 years ago.
• Why is it special? Campo del Cielo is one of the world’s most famous iron meteorites and has produced some exceptionally large specimens, including masses weighing many tons. Its fragments connect us to both the earliest history of our solar system and thousands of years of human history in the region.
