This 35.83 gram slice of the Gyarub Zangbo is one of the more unique meteorite specimens you'll see. It features a dense mosaic of fragmented olivine crystals in shades of amber, brown, and reddish-orange surrounded by bright nickel-iron metal. 

 

Gyarub Zangbo is not your typical pallasite. Found in the remote Qiangtang region of Tibet in 2020, it contains the familiar mixture of olivine and nickel-iron metal, but later research revealed a much stranger story. Gyarub Zangbo is now classified as an ungrouped pallasite, with unusual mineralogy and geochemistry that distinguish it from the major pallasite groups and point toward a separate parent body.

 

What makes Gyarub Zangbo especially fascinating is that this already unusual ungrouped pallasite contains evidence of carbonaceous-chondrite-like material. Researchers have identified a remarkable carbonaceous inclusion within the meteorite -- primitive material associated with the volatile-rich building blocks of the early solar system. That juxtaposition makes Gyarub Zangbo particularly intriguing: material representing very different stages of planetary evolution appears together in a single meteorite. Rather than being simply another beautiful olivine-and-iron pallasite, Gyarub Zangbo may preserve evidence of mixing or collision between primitive carbonaceous material and a differentiated planetary body. This meteorite is perhaps even more scientifically interesting than it is beautiful!
