On the morning of February 15, 2013, a small asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia, traveling at more than 40,000 miles per hour.

Seconds later, it broke apart high above the ground in an enormous airburst. The resulting shockwave raced across the region, shattering windows, damaging thousands of buildings, and injuring more than 1,000 people, mostly from flying glass and debris. The brilliant fireball was captured by dashboard cameras across the region, producing some of the most dramatic footage of a meteor ever recorded. 

Fragments of that asteroid survived the fiery passage through the atmosphere and fell to Earth as meteorites.

Your Chelyabinsk Meteorite

Each set contains 1–2 grams of genuine Chelyabinsk meteorite material, personally selected for your order. Your specimen may consist of one larger individual stone or multiple smaller stones, depending on the material available. 

Because every meteorite is a natural object, no two sets will be exactly alike. Each Chelyabinsk specimen displays the dark fusion crust created during atmospheric flight, while broken surfaces may reveal the lighter interior of the stone.

About Your Meteorite:

• What is it? 

  Chelyabinsk is an LL5 ordinary chondrite, a type of stony meteorite formed from some of the oldest material in our solar system. These specimens are surviving fragments of the asteroid that produced the spectacular Chelyabinsk fireball and airburst in 2013.

• Where is it from? 

  Chelyabinsk meteorites fell across the Chelyabinsk region of Russia after the incoming asteroid broke apart high in the atmosphere. Thousands of fragments survived the event and scattered across a large area, many landing in the snow-covered countryside. The parent asteroid was likely in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter before gravity sent it towards Earth. 

• How old is it? 

  The meteorite formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago during the early history of our solar system. 

• Why is it special? 

  The Chelyabinsk asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere at more than 40,000 mph and produced a powerful airburst high above the ground. The resulting shockwave shattered windows and damaged thousands of buildings across the region. Thanks to countless cameras that captured the fireball, Chelyabinsk became one of the most famous meteorite events of the modern era. These stones are actual surviving pieces of it.
