The Selma meteorite, discovered in 1906, is one of the most significant meteorites ever recovered in Alabama. It was uncovered during the digging of a trench, when workers unearthed an unusually heavy stone that was later recognized as extraterrestrial. Mineralogically, Selma is classified as an H4 chondrite, meaning it formed early in solar system history and contains abundant iron-rich silicate minerals along with well-preserved chondrules. “H” stands for high iron (around 25–30 wt% metal and iron-rich silicates) and “4” refers to the petrologic grade, meaning it has experienced moderate thermal metamorphism but still retains visible chondrules.

This 32.53 gram slice reveals the complex interior of a meteorite recovered in one of the most historically significant places in the southern United States. It's a thick slice than you'll typically find, so you can clearly see the exterior and interior of the stone.

Unique Features of This Meteorite

--Ordinary Chondrite--

Ordinary chondrites make up about 85% of all known falls. They are stony meteorites composed primarily of silicate minerals like olivine and pyroxene, with small amounts of nickel-iron metal and chondrules—tiny, spherical grains that formed in the early solar system. Their composition provides valuable insights into the building blocks of planets and the history of our solar system.

--Chondrules--

Small, spherical particles found in some meteorites, particularly in chondrites. These are believed to be some of the oldest solid materials in our solar system.

--Interior Metal Flecks--

The tiny shiny flecks visible in many chondrite meteorites are grains of iron-nickel metal that formed during the earliest stages of our solar system over 4.5 billion years ago. These grains can appear bright and reflective, while weathered meteorites may show darker oxidized metallic areas from long exposure to Earth’s environment.
