Moisture is one of the biggest long-term threats to meteorites and other sensitive specimens. Iron meteorites, pallasites, and many ordinary chondrites can oxidize or develop rust when exposed to elevated humidity. I wanted a simple way to add moisture protection to the display cases collectors already use without taking up valuable display space. With that goal in mind, I designed the DryCell.

The DryCell is a low-profile, refillable desiccant holder designed to fit discreetly beneath the foam insert of common meteorite, mineral, gem, and specimen display cases. Simply fill the DryBox with indicating desiccant, close the ventilated lid, and place it beneath the foam in your case. The openings throughout the enclosure allow air to circulate around the desiccant while keeping the beads securely contained.

When your indicating desiccant changes color to show that it has absorbed moisture, simply remove the DryBox, open it, and recharge or replace the desiccant. There’s no need to permanently modify your display case or leave loose desiccant packets sitting beside your specimen.

Available in multiple sizes for common collector display cases, the DryCell provides a clean, reusable way to help maintain a lower-humidity microenvironment around specimens that deserve a little extra protection.

Need Desiccant? I like Dry & Dry Orange Indicating Silica Gel, which turns dark green when it has absorbed 50-60% moisture and can be recharged with a little time in the microwave or oven.
