On Christmas Eve 2025, around 5:00 PM local time in Kenya, the sky over the Tana River area lit up with a brilliant fireball that cut eastward across the horizon. Seconds later came a loud sonic boom heard across many villages in the region. 

Eyewitness reports from across southeastern Kenya and early recoveries identified a large ~80km strewn field consistent with a shallow entry angle. Stones were recovered quickly, preserving a dark, rich fusion crust with minimal to no weathering. 

This individual was discovered by a villager in the Tana River region of Kenya. It weighs 31.09 grams and is mostly covered in fresh fusion crust from its fiery descent through our atmosphere. This meteorite has an oriented shape, with a slight rollover lip on its trailing side. One side of the fragment exposes the sharp contrast between the charred fusion crust and the light interior matrix of the stone as it was in space. A great educational piece, showing how thin the fusion crust layer is on top of the stone from the side view. The fusion crust is fresh and frothy. As a new fall, classification is currently ongoing with Cascadia Lab in Portland. Early analysis indicates a probable L6 chondrite, but the final classification may change prior to publication.

Unique Features of This Meteorite

--Ordinary Chondrite--

Ordinary chondrites make up about 85% of all known falls. They are stony meteorites composed primarily of silicate minerals like olivine and pyroxene, with small amounts of nickel-iron metal and chondrules—tiny, spherical grains that formed in the early solar system. Their composition provides valuable insights into the building blocks of planets and the history of our solar system.


--Fusion Crust--

A thin, dark, glassy layer on the exterior of a meteorite formed during its fiery passage through Earth's atmosphere. This feature is often described as a "burned" appearance.


--Regmaglypts--

Thumbprint-like indentations found on the surface of some meteorites. They form when the meteorite travels through Earth’s atmosphere, and melting and erosion caused by intense heat and pressure shape these grooves.
